International Year of Astronomy 2009 Activities in Sri Lanka

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has declared 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy (http://www.astronomy2009.org). This is a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, highlighted by the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei.
Prof. Kavan Ratnatunga and the Sri Lanka Astronomical Association will be working with the IAU to organise events for the IYA2009. A meeting will be held to discuss the issues and projects related to IYA2009.

The meeting will begin with a talk by Rev. Dr. Marvyn Fernando on the "Importance of Astronomy & its development in Sri Lanka".
