Description

The next Canadian Space Society(CSS) Meeting will be held on Tuesday March 18th @ 7:30 PM.

The speaker will be Magdalena Jecz, a member of the International Space University (ISU) START( team and a graduate, Cum-Laude, from the Master of Science in Space Management Program at ISU 2007.

To date, the space community has not been vocal enough about the applications of space systems in other areas of science and research. For archeologists, space systems could be a suitable tool for use in discovery monitoring or mapping their site of interest.

The START (Space Tools supporting Archeological Research and Tasks) project was completed by an interdisciplinary group of students from 16 countries during the 2006/2007 Masters of Space Science/Space Management program at the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg France.

During the initial phase of the project, the team analyzed the different areas of heritage preservation and archeology that could benefit from the use of space systems and technologies. Deciding to focus mainly on archeology, the team developed a report and a website. Aimed at reaching out to the archeological community, examples are used to present ways in which archeologists can and have utilized space systems to help complete a variety of tasks.

The team partnered with UNESCO in the creation promotion and maintenance of the START website. It was the team’s hope that the partnership would help lend credence, create and promote awareness and maintain the website.

The talk on March the 18th 2008 will give an overview of the project with specific examples of where and how current space technologies have been used within the archeological community.
