Space Security
Space Security
"Keeping with the intent of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, that space is to be a global commons for peaceful purposes, the definition of space security that guides this report* is:
The secure and sustainable access to, and use of, space and freedom from space-based threats.
The primary consideration is not the interests of the security of specific actors operating in space, but the security of space as an environment that can be sustained for use by all actors. Threats to the sustainable use of the space environment can originate in outer space or from Earth. Also of concern is the vulnerability of Earth from threats from space."

Space Security encompasses several important issues on which SGAC has already created several working groups:
Near Earth Objects (NEOs)
The Space Generation Advisory Council is working with Apollo astronaut Rusty Schweickart on different aspects in regard to Near Earth Objects. We are also exploring through him potential opportunities to work together with the Association of Space Explorers (ASE). Among those tasks are "Assisting in UN Legal Framework for International NEO Cooperation", "Asteroid Deflection Concepts" and "Outreach Activities".
Move an Asteroid 2008 Competition
The Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), through its sponsors, announces an international technical paper competition to develop unique and innovative concepts for how to deflect an asteroid or comet that may impact the Earth (referred to as mitigation). The competition calls for individuals or teams to write and submit a 3-10 page original technical paper on their innovative concept for mitigation.
Space Traffic Management
With an increase of traffic in space, a major task for space policy in the near future is Space Traffic Management. SGAC can support this process within COPUOS and raise awareness. Help shape the future of space law by participating in the initial steps of Space Traffic Management.
Space Debris
This project seeks to engage youth in the space debris issue and to support policy makers in the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in drafting a possible legislation to help solve the space debris problem. We will draft recommendations for possible legislation for the members of the COPUOS after learning about the various space debris mitigation possibilities and discussion on the Space Debris forums.
