african space agency, a gateway to effective utilization of space technology for sustainable development.

varous countries within africa have been active in the utilization of space related technologies for quite some time. however african countries have little resources individaully to pursue a dynamic space program aimed at sustainability. more over with the over lapping of borders and so many regional associations triving and cooperating in africa, it makes sense for african countries to unite in space. ESA is a perfect example of what a cooperation in space can achieve, the countries that form the european space agency came to the realization that cooperating with each other makes for a better and more economical access to space resources.
the focus of african countries is of course on the utilization of space for environmental monitoring , disaster management, communication, control of desertification, weather forecasting ,climate monitoring etc. none of the problems currently plagueing african countries can be isolated to one country, most disasters are international in scale and require the intervention of neighbouring countries.
an african space agency will have the advantage of being international, intercultural, and widely spread to handle regional problems. it will also enjoy collaboration with other space agencies of world as they will the know the point of contact for a particular issue.
i think this idea which is mostly advocated by the south african space community is a good idea and needs to be encouraged.
all comments are welcome!

thats good idea and it can

thats good idea and it can work.

for sure we have to put our efforts in space education because its application influences everyone in life.

with our positive mind we are able?

lets take it even to our school curriculums.

you know what? let's try this;

we should make a steering team in Africa which will work in touch with UN via SGAC RCs and NPoC in getting proper information and scholarship for meeting leaders and lobby them to take space in account as it is only a matter of attitude.

The group should go well equiped with the prons and cons and the levels of getting involved with space versus the level of their economy.

SADC and AU meetings should as well be the target of the steering team.

well, need your comments.

thanks sabatain

i am in full agreemement with your post. the only thing is the issue of scholarships, we could try but i dont know how easy it will be to actaully get the UN or any other body to give us attention. my own idea is for us to try and expand the influence of SGAC in countries by getting more members. the larger the membership the higher the influence we get starting from schools and gradually reaching the society as a whole. it will involve money of course but by the time we get a lot of membership and we are known , it will be easier to talk to the government about the need for space in development. i am open to all ideas.

by the way can you please give me info about space activities in tanzania?
all bodies involved...i need names, addresses and contact persons(if possible.)
dont worry if u only have a name, i will use it to search and contact the organization.
cheers

You guys are very right, there has been a proposition to have such event at the AU level, I think it is still on the pipeline, its benefits is very enormous, where space assets can be shared by African countries facilities will be evenly distributed, this will even increase the awareness and enthusiasm about Space in Africa.I pray it will not be dead as that of an African country being chosen as a permanent representative in the UN security council, that's our problem no consensus building and coming together for a common goal and benefit.

charles welcome to the topic

i have been gathering information about all african countries and their involvement with space technology. i must say, africans have embraced the utilization of space in many ways. its quiet evident from the number of schools i have catelogued that a lot of africans have been trianed in useful courses that will contribute to the growth and developemnt of a viable space agency.
we have so many schools offering electrical/ electronics engineering with communication, which is the backbone for satellite communication for example.

the project is still ongoing and i will like to analyse the spread of the technonogy in africa and see where we might be lacking and what can be done to ugument such cases.
as i wrote above, the project and my final report is going to be hosted by the SPATIAL DATA INFRASTRUCTURE- AFRICA news letter team, thereby making it accessible to all that are in need of information about africa.
what ever happens i will let every one know through this forum.

cheerio!
