Can we relate this business model to space?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to see if we could apply a business model I am somewhat familiar with to space:

My mother co-owns a company that produces what are known as Life Care Plans and Medicare Set-asides. When individuals are in workers compensation injury accidents or other insured injury accidents, these are reposts that list their medical history and estimate what financing will be necessary for the person to have their medical needs taken care of for the rest of their life (which is also estimated depending on the injury).

These plans are requested by the insurance companies that have to pay the claim, and used to plan structured settlements that will cover the cost. The insurance companies must do this since it is mandated by US law. If Medicare (the US social insurance system for those over age 65) is involved, then a Medicare Set-aside must be completed which Medicare than uses to know how much to “set-aside” in case the insurance settlement will not cover the individuals total medical needs.

Why do I want to apply this to space? Writing these reports is a low overhead business. My mother, her business partner, and other nurses they hire as independent contractors work from home using only computers, the internet, and telephones. Their expertise, being registered nurses, gives them the background needed to understand the claimant’s medical problems and asses the costs of those problems (which they call various companies and doctors that handle the drugs and procedures to estimate). A report may take from 1 to 2 weeks to write and is sold for $1,000 to $4,000 depending on complexity. They do not pay for office space, nor do they need to purchase raw materials as a manufacturing business would.

Can we apply this to space? We are all space professionals. Are there reports we could write that could be sold to various governments, international organizations, and space businesses that we could produce using our computers, the internet, and our knowledge?

I saw that SGAC has helped to write a European Green Paper on space policy (very cool). Could we write reports for other organizations and is there the potential to make money doing so, so that SGAC can fund further initiatives?

I’ve racked my brain with this and thought I would throw it out there and get everyone’s input.

Sure... hypothetically

Sure... hypothetically anyone could write a paper and try to sell it. But unless its new research, there is probably already a paper out there that says anything anyone in this forum would write.

Here in the United States there are many government grants and contracts where people write papers for money, but they usually are bid on and completed by companies or through academic institutes rather than individuals. I am not sure how this works on the international level... but rather than re-invent the wheel, papers should be published in line with the projects that SGAC is already working on.

It would be great for SGAC to produce a few more Green/White papers on space related topics to increase the visibility of SGAC.
