SGAC introduces a new framework for Space Traffic management (STM) at the UN COPUOS

|

On Monday, 16th June in the afternoon, Johanna Catena of the UK made a technical presentation on behalf of SGAC titled "Introducing a New Framework for Space Traffic Management System (STMS)" to UN COPUOS.

Johanna shares her experience with the SGAC community:

The Framework is a legal model to address youth's concerns regarding the space and earth environment as well as space security issues. It was a great honor to be able to present proposed 'model' solutions to key decision makers to enable the safe passage of space traffic. The presentation was the result of two months of work compiling the views of youth into a coherent International Framework, that would address issues such as international co-operation between civil/ commercial and military operators and International liability.

This was my first time in presenting to COPUOS and it was a privilege to be able to raise awareness and create further discussions regarding Space Traffic Management on behalf of the youth. COPUOS was extremely supportive and receptive to the presentation. Delegations provided valuable feedback that will help to develop the model Framework. Suggestions included developing data sharing and policy issues working towards standardizing space operations between different operators, as well as further developing space security co-operation issues.

This is a first step of many to enable future generations to safely continue the exploration and use of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, following the Article I of the Outer Space Treaty 1967 as new purposes and endeavors are utilized by both Governmental and commercial operators. I am extremely proud to represent the current generation regarding these issues.
