Draft survey online - post revisions here

Hi Team,

Well done! I have created the draft survey based on Bee's document, and it is now online at http://www.spacegeneration.org/survey/survey.php?id=KW5VDX84

As Bee said, it incorporates your inputs up until March 7. So, here are the next steps for completion

  1. Review the forum posts from 7-10 March and look at revising the questions and structures
  2. Some questions I have marked as needing more work. Please consider how to improve them.
  3. Check all questions in detail to verify their objectivity, that they are sufficiently decoupled, and not too leading in the way they are written. Also check for missing questions, or redundant options.
  4. Do a general grammar and spelling check

Please post all suggestions here in this thread and I will improve them as we go.

Good work so far!

Chris

With regard to the first

With regard to the first question in “Mars”, I agree that we’d better not have too technical questions. But we can ask in another way:
What new technologies do you think should have priority to be developed for coming Mars exploration and exploitation missions?
* Cost-saving technologies, e.g. cheaper propulsion methods etc.
* Life supporting systems that work longer and more efficiently
* Use environment-friendly technologies during the mission, especially Martian environment-friendly
* New special materials designed for Mars missions

And for the last question of “Space Stations”, I think the options for it could be changed into:
* Be more effective in terms of cost or science benefits
* Pay more attention on safety and reliability
* We need a docking station for further space exploration missions
* We don't need a new space station

Meanwhile, maybe we can add another option to the question “Should a new space station be constructed? ”:
* Yes, by the cooperation of governments and private industry

Also, maybe we should have the questions numbered first, so that it could be more convenient for us to discuss them and process the survey results.

Thanks! I've made all your suggested changes. I particularly liked the space station revisions.

Keep it coming guys! We are getting close.

edit: I looked at the survey

edit:

I looked at the survey more closely. Here are some suggestions:

For question 3.1, "releive" should be "relieve."

For question 3.2, "to should preserve its tranquility" should probably be "to preserve its tranquility."

For question 4.2, "to satisfied mankinds need to explore" should be "to satisfy mankind's need to explore."

For question 5.1, here are some links to verify the date for ISS's closing date (which is 2017):

http://www.cbo.gov/showdoc.cfm?index=5772&sequence=5 first paragraph

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISS under Costs

Although a more recent article says that NASA is considering extending the ISS program from "2016 to 2020."

Minor Corrections

It looks great I just would like to point out and correct some grammatical errors.

3.2

Should probably be changed to read "If we were to mine the moon for resources what would be their most important use."

6.4. Several of you felt that the current space law regime as prescribed in the Outer Space Treaty and several related documents needed to be revisited and updated in line with the current and future space activities. What do you feel would be a suitable solution to this [This question is a bit chaotic still] *required

The question here works fine but I think that the answer - Individual governments should maintain their autonomy in space - would be a good addtion.

3.3.

Possibly ambiguous.

4.1. What one technology should have priority of development for coming Mars exploration and exploration missions?

Agree with Another on

Agree with Another on question 3.2. And for 3.3, I think it's already covered by 3.1, so maybe we can remove it, or replace it with this one:
What important fields should be opened to private industry or commercial organizations in the Lunar exploration activities?
* Mining
* Transportation between Earth and Moon
* Moon tourism
* Scientific research
* Electronical, Chemical or Biological industries using the special environment on Moon

For question 4.1, maybe it's "Mars exploration and exploitation missions" ?

changes done again - still more to go

I've made all the above changes, either exactly as you said or with some minor adjustments.

I think the whole survey needs a finer look. We really have to be sure that it makes sense and will get the information we want out of it.

Please take another look over it today and I will evaluate where we are in a few hours.

Also, don't forget it will be time to get the PR machine rolling again soon.

On 2.3, I'm not sure what

On 2.3, I'm not sure what "spin-offs and spin-ins" mean.

3.2. If we were to mine the moon for resources, what would be the highest priority?

I think maybe "would" should be "should."

5.3. If there was to be a new space station, what would be the main rationale for its construction

This one, too. Also, one of the answers: "pay more attention on safety and reliability" should be "pay more attention to safety and reliability."

6.1 "How should space be goverened?" should be "How should space be governed?"

6.2 "Who should form the leadership of this government" is slightly iffy. Because the previous question, 6.1, is "how should space be governed? So, maybe 6.2 should probably be something like "If a new space government is needed, who should form the leadership of this government?"

On 6.4, in one of the answers, you have "lunar" twice. Is that a typo?

OK, got all those.

The term "cis lunar" refers to the area around the moon, while lunar means the moon itself. Moon people know the term but almost nobody else does. Should we remove it?

Anything else to change?

"Moon people know the term but almost nobody else does. Should we remove it?"

I think people can get the gist of that answer without revisions. If you want to remove it, though, you can.

Looking pretty good. One thing I do noticed though taking it again is that using my wide screen monitor I find Im leaning way over to the left in order to see it straight on. It might be nice to center the questions for better readability by people with similar computers.

Ready to go?

If you guys are happy with it, I can make it live when I get to work tomorrow.

What we need are an announcement email to go to past participants inviting them to fill in round 2, and an announcement for the site, and maybe a news article for this site too. A press release wouldn't hurt. Definitely the materials for this site should try and weave in some of the excitement about the opportunity we have at Boston.

While I am asleep here in Australia, why not get a start on these things, and then we should be ready to roll when I get in.

Cheers,
Chris

Hey Chris!
Thanks - the progress here has been awesome!
Can I suggest one minor correction at the end:
"All volunteers who have been deliberating online on what the direction of this survey will be thank you immensely for your input."
Can we please change it to:
"All volunteers who have been deliberating online on what the direction of this survey wish to thank you immensely for your input."

Its looking great!

One press release coming up. :-)

Ok, howz this for press release text?

Call to probe further into the Key Visions for the next 50 years: How do we make them come true?

In early January 2007, Space Generation Advisory Council put out a call for what the youth of today thought would be the key events of the next 50 years in space activities. This first call attracted 275 youth visionaries from all over the world to input to what new events would create the next giant leap for mankind. Is it space tourism, is it a lunar base that shall really be able to help us conquer the space frontier, or is a human landing on Mars that YOU wish to see in the coming 5, 10, 20 or 50 years?

Following this first success (thanks to you!), the wide range of ideas has now been studied by collaborative work between fellow youth space advocates representing the Space Generation and the distilled ideas have led to some key questions as to what are the priorities and how these cornerstone events can be realized for benefiting the human race. You can help us take this input to the world leaders!

The Space Generation Advisory Council in support of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications has teamed up with the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, the Boston University Center for Space Physics, the Secure World Foundation and the Planetary Society, to provide an opportunity for two young space enthusiasts to help plan the next 50 years in space. Representatives will present the Youth Vision, a result of two surveys and online deliberations, to prominent world leaders such as Freeman Dyson, Elon Musk and Dr Harrison Schmitt gathered for the planning workshop, held on 14 April 2007, in conjunction with a conference titled, "The Future of Space Exploration: Solutions to Earthly Problems?" at the Boston University in USA.

All applicants 29 or under are invited to give further input regarding key events and space activities via a simple Round 2 survey can be found at the SGAC website (www.spacegeneration.org). Deadline for receiving completed entries for Round 2 is 1st of April 2007. This input will be captured in a publication tentatively titled: "Looking Back, Looking Forward: The Next Generation's 50-Year Vision for Space".

About the Space Generation Advisory Council

The Space Generation Advisory Council in support of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications is a United Nations endorsed organization dedicated to bringing forth the voice of today’s youth on tomorrow’s space issues. Quick things to check:

I simply took the old excel spread sheet (233 entries + 42 entries from China) = 275 enteries. Hope this is correct. I wished to include how many countries we had covered too, but thought 'all over the world' summarizes it.

I think the text is a little too long, but this is what I could come up with. I also added the new sponsor (planetary society) and new deadline.

Is there a more precise url for the round 2 survey, Chris? Is this good for you to get going?

Please let me know of any changes you d ALL like on the text. Thanks in advance!

Sounds great. Do we have a mailing list for the past participants or should we pull up the results lists and begin sending individual emails to the past participants?

Otherwise I've got half a dozen places to begin posting ads for this. I hope we can get even more people to fill this one out.

Hey Another!
Chris mentioned previously that there was a mailing list, so I guess he can do that once we are all happy with the release text. Website posting really helped last time, so I d think we can go ahead after one round of comments.
Thanks for keeping the ball rolling!

Awesome work everyone!

Hey Everyone,

Sorry, I had to run away and be out of email contact for the past week and was delayed to be back on scheduled time. I am very glad to see the revisions - the survey is looking tight and ready to go. (Sorry for all the errors that were left in my first draft)... :-)

I shall post a web press release text here - feel free to take it and paste it on blogs, personal or SEDS websites, other chapters of space enthusiasts societies at your institution and any press distribution channels you know of. AND don't forget to send an email out to all friends/collegues/sg contacts! We managed to get a good wave of interest on the last one - which proves two things:
(1) we can do it again
(2) we can do it get it out to more people!

The survey looks fun to fill for the space enthusiast/advocates, so awesome team work here!
More from me in a bit.

Stand by + Email text to mailing list

Hey Everyone,
I guess, its night time in Europe(+Africa), so if you can send in any corrections you feel are needed in the press release text to me whilst you have daylight in Asia-Pacific and Americas, I can get up and send it out to all major websites tomorrow and we can really make the best of the rest of March with collecting the entries.

Yes! Certainly.

Thanks Quantum, Yes, please do. We need to send this to all of our outreach outlets - universities, groups, chapters, astronomy clubs, SEDS (?), blogs, - send it to anyone you know. :-) Please forward it on...

Ah, but, we need Chris to take the 'This is a TEST survey. Answers will be DELETED before the survey is made public' away and link it to the 'Survey' link when one clicks on the Key Events in Space tab on the website...
