Hi team!

We have now 132 results in the survey! I think everyone's promotion has been working very well.

You can now download the data using the link on the participants section main page. Next step of course, is working out how to process the data, and what kind of follow-on questions we might ask in a possible round 2 survey. Over to you!

Well, we could ask people to

Well, we could ask people to rank which of the events they see as the most important or urgent.

P.S. I can't open the XLS file for some reason.

data processing

Hi Chris,

I was just looking at the results of the survey, lots of interesting ideas! I was wondering if there is an idea yet on how to organize the data and how this data will be presented at the symposium?

Kind regards,

Esméé

A suggestion for organization to help guide round 2

Hello all,

Firstly, I have questions -
(1) Do we know what is the format of the workshop where we shall present our findings and final documents?
(2) Is it OK to merge most ideas without keeping the names and other statistics attached to them?

if the answers are No to (1) and Yes to (2), here is a suggestion on how to organize this large collection of very, very interesting ideas. Looking at the excel sheet, there is a good spectrum in not only the topics covered but also the timescales.

So, I suggest we organize data in the following categories.
For the different timescales, the collected data could look like this example:

Timescale: 10 years from now
Row:

  • Within Earth
  • Near Earth
  • Solar System/Moon
  • Solar System/Mars
  • Solar System/Others
  • Outer solar system
  • Beyond solar system
  • Astronomy

Column:

  • Technology
  • Science
  • Outreach
  • Education
  • Unification/intangible benefits
  • Economics

Giving us a matrix within which we can place all activities that are marked for 10 years from now. These will result in a priority list of a list of opportunities that can develop into a roadmap. This might be a lead to what we can target in the questions for Round 2 such as: what are the gaps, what are the overlaps and what can be the cost effective or logical bridging gaps, so on and so forth.

Just to reiterate, this is an example. this will lead to a matrix within which Candidate x's "Privatizing space industry and ISS" would fit in entry for Near Earth and Economics and "create space awareness for current programs" would fit into Outreach and Within Earth.

I am sure there are multiple ways, so please let me know if you have come across something you feel is effective. The entries on the rows and columns can be expanded or reduced depending on what we find is the popular focus in a particular timescale.

My humble 2 cents...

Good ideas Bee. One way to

Good ideas Bee. One way to start might be to do a rough sorting first to see what the emerging themes are. We added the "keywords" question for this purpose. You could merge similar keywords together (moon base, moonbase, base on the moon, moon outpost, etc) together and see what you get.

Regarding the respondee's names, perhaps you won't need them for a first rough sorting, but perhaps later you might want to do an analysis across countries, or compare how people voted against a possible second round survey. How you process these results and what you come up with is up to you and the team here.

I agree with bee, a logical matrix seems, well...logical.
Well done.

Questions and Suggestions

Yes the first thing to do would probably be to start getting general idea groupings together. It will be easier to handle the material if its not so scattered. Makes sense.

I have a few questions regarding the matrix concept.
1.) Would there be some overlap with the rows between say the idea of building a telescope on the dark side of the moon? It would seem to fit under both Solar System/Moon and Astronomy topics. Perhaps a bit more detail is needed for them?

2.) Do you intend to apply the same basic topics to each time scale?

Also a comment. In the column it seems to me that one along the lines of "Politics" would be appropriate. Much of what is done in space is done by government entities of one sort or another and increasing political support for space and politicians who understand it will be a very important part of any endeavor we wish to undertake.

Thanks for the suggestions

Thanks for the suggestions all, I shall be moving this to the output forum. And shall post the file so after sorting both according to keywords and the categorization I posted earlier. I started sorting last night, but it is difficult as most enteries need to be moved manually due to the overlaps.

Till Soon!

permanent moon base..???

Two key reasons for establishing a base were to prepare for a manned mission to Mars - and ultimately the expansion of human civilisation to other planets. The project is likely to cost hundreds of billions of dollars. The most likely location for the base is the moon's south pole, which offers the best position for solar power as it is sunlit for three quarters of the time. The lunar exploration objectives are meant to capture the entire set of activities that anyone involved in lunar exploration may want to pursue.Power is a big challenge," Solar arrays are an obvious answer, but away from the poles 14 days of lunar sunlight are followed by 14 days of darkness, so "how do you handle the dormancy periods?"

Shared Workload

Bee one thing we might do is divide the task of sorting up to speed and ease the process. Each person taking a topic or two. Especially since it does - as you say - require manual work on it. It will probably need to go through a few drafts anyway to get everything where we want it as new ideas come to light.
