Welcome to the SGC PR Team Work Forum!

The key focus of Space Generation Congress projects this year is sustainability, and the PR Team we start here will have that. We're not getting into this for the three days of SGC with a couple weeks of talking beforehand. SGAC needs to become very well known in many forums, and we need to make that happen over the next weeks, months, and even years. You can participate by taking on a ten-minute task or a months-long leadership role. Most people here will agree that space is our future, and promotion is a huge part of creating our global space youth community.

In case you haven't read the PR Team Project Description (which you should probably do soon)...
PR Team Mission: Address key issues of public relations for SGAC and improve international communications between young space activists, developing in-house expertise and tools for communication, promotion, and media.

The Mission was in the Project Team description when I took on leadership, but I'd like to propose a Vision for the PR Team as well: To promote the Space Generation Advisory Council so that every space-interested person on this planet we share is aware of it and every space-passionate person born since 12 April 1961 will be a part of it.

------------------------------------
The Plan
------------------------------------
We'll develop the expertise through training and research, which we'll work on together and at SGC. One of my goals for SGC is to have some experienced media people speak to us about some of the skills we'll need to be developing to accomplish our PR goals successfully.

What I'm planning here is that we'll have several ongoing projects that have been requested by the SGAC (such as a newsletter, calendar, etc.) as well as an annual Big PR Product that will support the SGAC PR Team Mission. Each year the Big PR Product will have a crucial stage of collaboration occur during SGC.

The Big Product for SGC2007 will be a 3-5 minute promotional video describing and promoting SGC and SGAC, which will be posted on SGAC/SGC and video sharing websites, and distributed to sponsors and supporters. Video is a very visual and engaging way to convey ideas, and it's very popular with youth today. It will capture the attention of potential Delegates, and help potential sponsors better understand our organisation.

------------------------------------
Roles
------------------------------------
o Regional PR Liaisons (gather information from and distributes information to the Regional Coordinators and National Points of Contact for updates... it would be helpful if the RCs/NPoCs either filled this role themselves or appointed someone trustworthy, but we'll need at least one for each region)

*** Newsletter Team (monthly output of all SGAC activity) --> See "Newsletter Team!" forum topic for info
o Information Acquisition Officers (who will collect info to pass on to editors)
o Text editors
o Layout editors

*** SGAC Start Up Pack (information for initiating SGAC activity in countries with new NPoCs and starting a national space youth network)
o Lessons Learned and Strategic Plans formed by people currently in the process of starting SGAC activities in their region
o Experienced reviewers to give input and compare against their start up efforts

*** Raw Materials Acquisition Team (RMAT?) onsite at SGC (collect raw video and audio clips, as well as quotes, candid and group photographs, etc.)

*** PR07 Product Team (working on pre-production, production, and post-production of The Video)
o Video clip curator
o Script text writers
o Storyboarders
o Video acquisition team

I've got lots more fleshing out on all of these products and roles, as well as a schedule, which will be posted in these forums under more specific topics (e.g. "Newsletter Team!") soon. If you’re interested in being on the PR Team, please introduce yourself here and let us know the roles in which you’re most interested.

introduction

Well, I asked for introductions, so I'll also introduce myself.

My name is Jessica Culler. I'm a 26 year old female from the state of Oklahoma in the United States. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2005 with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. I've worked at a couple different NASA Centers and have at least toured almost all of ten of them. In fall of 2005 I did the equivalent of the Summer Session Program at ISU. SGC 2004 was my first interaction with the Space Generation, and this is my first year of being involved as organizing staff (I'm currently SGC 2007 Recruitment Coordinator, as well as a Project Team Leader). I love sharing my passion for space, and am currently doing independent consultant work for the Oklahoma NASA Space Grant Consortium in educational outreach. I keep a blog at http://spacesooner.blogspot.com.

My role here is the PR Project Team Leader, and I'll be organising the show here. Let me know what I can do for you.

That's who I am.

So... Who are you, and who do you want to be? :-)

Welcome!

Hello, Jessica (etc.)

My name is Marcia Fiamengo. I am a 24 year old Oregonian currently acclimatizing to life in North Florida. I did my undergraduate work in nuclear engineering at Oregon State University, where I spent five wonderful years doing various microgravity research experiments in association with NASA's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program. I recently wrapped up work with Autonomy Productions on a documentary film called Generation Explore chronicling the penultimate OSU Microgravity Flight Team. I am currently working on the next phase of my education at the University of Florida studying nuclear engineering and geology. I work for AxiomSpace, a small space technology research company in Jacksonville. I also do consulting for Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium and am currently working with Peace Corps Volunteers in El Salvador to develop a grass-roots space education movement in Latin America. Space exploration and saving the planet are my two favorite hobbies.

I am particularly interested in promoting spaceflight awareness and general education to international youth as well as solving the communication gaps between different generations, socio-economic groups, and scientists and philosophers and the general public, especially where it concerns spaceflight. I am very much looking forward to working with all of you.

Let me know where I can be of use and what you need me to do!

Hey, Marcia,

I think the newsletter is what SGAC wants us to hit up first, so how do you feel about being the North (and/or South) American Information Acquisition Officer? Here's the folks you'd be getting info from each month:
NA: http://spacegeneration.org/index.php?page=010203000000
SA: http://spacegeneration.org/index.php?page=010204000000

All you have to do is make sure, by 21-23 of each month, you've got a blurb from each of them detailing *anything* they did for or in the name of Space Generation. This alone will do so much for keeping Space Generation activities going year-round. Does that sound okay?

How do you feel about text or layout editing? :-)

Thank you!

Jessica,

Jessica,

Sounds great! I'll get on it. The text/layout isn't a problem. :) I'm wondering what would be the most effective format? Basic HTML is probably easiest to access, but it might be nice to have a more formal PDF posted online. Suggestions?

Should we be concerned about reproducing the text in other languages besides English? It would be very easy for me to run an identical edition in Spanish, but I unfortunately know very little French or Portugese.

Hey all,
To start with Jessica’s first question, I am Ben Higgins. I recently graduated from Arizona State with a B.S. in aerospace engineering. While at school I interned with the Arizona Space Grant and worked on projects including microgravity experiments, tilt-wing aircraft, and human powered vehicles. The one that captivated me the most, however, was a project to create public relation campaigns for different areas of NASA. It truly was the most challenging task I had ever worked on. So I hope to take some lessons learned and use them for this project. I look forward to working with everyone.

Introduction

Hello Jessica,

Firstly let me introduce myself:
I am Ahmad the official Point of Contact of SGAC for Afghanistan, currently living in the capital Kabul ,I am 18 and I am going to be graduated next year from 12th class of International Ariana Afghan-Turk high school, I am interested in Science specially Astronomy which is making my whole future-dreams.

I red all about the projects of SGC, I got interested at the rest of them but I preferred to join the PR project after a long thinking, I think to Innovate, and implement new ways to promote space activities in the whole world the PR team can do it in a better way (as this makes one of the ongoing tasks and goals of the PR team).
I wish all members of our team would work together and share their ideas for making the PR team more active and we should search other students who have interest in the PR team from all parts of the globe to join us for better international communications among youths.

According to our topic, this is my first time that I am joining a project team in the SGAC because I am newly selected and I am feeling very excited that for the first time I am going to work in a project team and together with people who have the same target and aim as mine. But I would do the best as I can for the PR team and therefore my future plans are:
To Initiate a first ever space group of youths in Afghanistan and I am planning to invite other students and youths to my school and make a conference to make a space-interested youth group which will talk on the future plans and projects for promoting the SGAC and other space related activities which can be consisted of inspiration and encouragement, because as today’s space leaders have one thing in common to say that ‘today’s youths are the leaders of space exploration of tomorrow’.
I want this conference to be held in next weeks and right now I am trying to contact the Ministry of Education for help, nowadays I designing posters to spread them in the city and I will invite the top space interested students from all high schools and universities and I believe that the media would be there too and I will try to have good relations with them because the media can play the vital role and also this is one of our PR goal to be in contact with the media all the time.
After my conference I will post my conference’s photos here to be viewable to all and from this I will make a good presentation as a part of the results of works of PR team.

This can be a good idea for other members who do not have any activities for space in their countries to hold such a conference at their school or university which may not cost for them but off course they must have good relation with the teachers as I have.

Jessica, I had mentioned to you about the Power Point presentation for the conference and I wish this will make my conference more interesting...I am waiting for you.
THANKS.

Let’s unlock the Secrets together.

INTRODUCTION

My name is Castory Ntullu, 25 years old, a third year students at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, taking Bachelor of Arts with Education. I have been involved in running various youth activities within and outside the country for quite sometime, particularly on the environmental issues, due to the extremely environmental degradation which lead to the Global Climatic Change, which is the major threat to our Well-being if something is not going to be done. I am a National Focal Point (NFP) of Africa Environment Outlook for youth (AEO-for-youth) Tanzania, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya at UNEP-Gigiri. I have been a NFP since 2004 till now. And few days ago I have been appointed by the Executive Council Members of Space Generation, to be the National Point of Contact (NPoC) for Tanzania and also I am in the Public Relation Team as a Newsletter person representing Africa.
Email: cnlizget_24@yahoo.com

THE FOLLOWING IS THE FRAMEWORK OF WHAT I WANT TO DO EFFECTIVELY FROM 12TH MARCH – 22ND APRIL 2007, as my starting point to work with Space Generation as the NPoC.

1 To prepare and release a PRESS RELEASE to the University Students in Tanzania, so that they can become aware of the Space Generation Youth Network and how they can benefit out of it by joining the Network. 5 Days (From 12th – 16th March)
2 To get in touch with other NPoCs from Africa, so that we can get to know each other and work together as I will be representing them, as a Newsletter person from Africa, so as I can have their inputs for the Newsletters. 7 Days (From 19th – 25th March)
3 To prepare a round table discussion with chair or dean of the Astronomy, Physics, Engineering with some University Students to look for some logistics that we can use to establish the Space Generation Association at the University level. 6Days (From 26th – 31st March)
4 To organize the physical Space related activities that will be open to all who wish to participate. This event will involve drawings etc. 3 Weeks (From 1st – 21ST April

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO MAKE OUR NEWSLETTER UP TO DATE.

Hallow Jessica!

I would to comment on something, that if we want to have a wonderful Newsletter, we have to make sure that we strongly involve the inputs from all the National Point of Contacts within a particular Region.

For example if I am representing the Africa, then I have to make sure that I get the update from the NPoC from all over Africa. So that our Newsletter can have the update information that cover all the spheres.

I will keep on coming to you in case of anything.

Yep, Castory, that's exactly the plan. To have newsletter information gatherers from each region that organize info from their Regional Coordinators and National Points of Contacts. I'm so glad to have you on board for Africa!

Hola!

Hello Everyone!

Like Jessica, I too am from Oklahoma! I have a great interest in promoting space to the world! In the current job I have (recruiting for Yellowstone National Park...not space related, but I love it just the same!), I do a lot of advertising and promotion! A lot of the topics that have been discussed in the forums, I do on a regular basis, so I'd be so happy to help out!

A little of my background...I graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL with a B.S. in Aerospace Studies. I got into SGC through Tim Bailey (another ERAU Alum) when I met him randomly at the FAA Space Transportation Conference in Washington, D.C. I attended SGC in Valencia last year, but only to help out.

PR and Marketing is going to be sooo important to the future of space travel and research. Sometimes it's hard to see that, especially when we're all surrounded by people who love the idea of space travel as much as all of us do. I believe it is our responsibility to get the public interested in space like we all were during the early years of space travel. There are a lot of people in the world who cannot grasp the larger scope of the importance of space travel and it's our jobs to show them how important it is to our future survival and progession as citizens of the Earth!

I look forward to working with all of you!

Hey, everyone! I'm Ellyn Johnson from Pittsburgh, PA. I'm currently a first year medical student at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (Cleveland, OH) interested in specializing in aviation and space (aerospace) medicine. I'd like to participate in the PR team's activities because the average person still looks at space travel as science fiction, not present day reality. People need to understand the importance of space exploration and I'd like to join in the campaign! It'll also boost my own PR skills, since I constantly have to use them to explain what aerospace medicine is and why it's important. I look forward to working with you all!

Hi Everyone!

Ayubowan!

My name is Yohan Ferreira and I am a 25 year old part-time student and educator of Speech & Drama in Sri Lanka. I have been truly fascinated by Astronomy and space exploration since my childhood, and enjoy gazing at the stars on clear, dark nights with my telescope. Since 2000, I have been working as a NASA Volunteer - Education and Public Outreach Coordinator for NASA Quest (a K-12 web-based project for students, teachers and space enthusiasts) and several other space related programmes. This includes being Assistant Coordinator of the Student Signatures in Space (S3) program for the annual Space Day.

In the summer of 2002, I had the honour of representing our country as a guest student at the International Space School at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, USA. It was a life-changing memorable experience that I still greatly cherish to this day! It was absolutely fantastic working with 37 other students from 18 countries for 2 weeks on a simulated first human mission to Mars.

I enjoy writing, communication, marketing and PR, so decided to join the SGAC PR team. Astronomy is still very much considered a hobby here in Sri Lanka, so I have been trying to change that perception and popularise it among the local youth and space enthusiasts in recent years. This has taken the form of a few guest lectures at events and involving local schools in the S3 program. My latest endeavour was to establish an online group exclusively for astronomy & space enthusiasts in Sri Lanka: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SkyTrackers

I earnestly look forward to working with each and everyone of you to promote the SGAC, its ideals and to inspire millions of youth around the world to reach for the stars! (literally!)

P.S. 'Ayubowan' is the traditional Sri Lankan greeting used to say both 'hello' and 'goodbye'. It wishes the recipient long life :-)

Hello!
I'm new to Space Gen stuff, but am excited to meet other folks interested in space!
After earning a B.S. in Biological Sciences, I worked at NASA Ames supporting life science payloads for the Space Shuttles and ISS. I then went to grad school and earned my M.S. studying Mars climate modeling. Now I am back at Ames working on developing an infrastructure for collaboration between NASA and the public- see colab.arc.nasa.gov
I'm interested in PR stuff largely from recent experience working on Media Coordination for Yuri's Night at NASA Ames recently- it was an awesome event!

Heyo!!

I am also new to Space Gen and really look forward to meeting all of you who are attending the Space Gen Conference in September! Currently I am a student at California State University, Sacramento finishing my degree in Government with an International Relations concentration. I work for the California Space Authority in our State and Local Government Relations office and serve as liaison to a few of our collaborative groups that guide the California Space Enterprise Strategic Plan, and NASA Ames' Colab project. My interest here is to gain an international perspective of space and use that to bring about public and policy maker awareness as well as personal experience.

This will sound weird, I know, but see you in INDIA!

Hello, I am as new to Space Gen. I reside in Bagdad, Arizona. My primary occupation is that of visual art, secondary work involves mining copper here in Arizona. The most valuable service I can offer Space Gen is in raising awareness and public relations. I have alot of expierence in organizing community events, primarily with artistic overtones, and look foward to putting together projects dealing with space and how it can be actualized in peoples lives. In the past 30 years space has been to most people something seen on T.V. or read about, however this is no longer the case as we are now at the point where space is becoming tangable to our generation.
From the Space Gen site I plan to inform myself on the current movements in this grand undertaking. I must admit I have only a base knowledge of the technology needed, but through art I hope to bring space exploration back to the forefront of peoples imagination, where all great things must begin. Let me know how to help, assist me in deepening my understanding, and together we will dazzle even the stars!

Introduction

Hi there! My name is Angela Whiteside, I am 21 years old and from the UK. My passion in life is learning about astronomy and space exploration, and I hope that my career will take me down this path.

I have recently completed a BSc in Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University, and am about to attend Cranfield University (North of London) to continue my studies ina Master of research.

I too am new to the forums here but would love to get involved in anyway I can. I enjoy promoting science, and have undertaken work experience for a science communication company. I have also given lectures to prospective students of astrophysics at Cardiff.

I must say a secret ambition of mine would be to present an astronomy or space exploration show on TV!

Any projects going on in the UK that you know of, just let me know and I would love to help!
